Become a Member of the Legion of Scriveners for Reform
What does the Legion of Scriveners for Reform need more than anything else? Scriveners!
What exactly is a scrivener? Traditionally, a scrivener was a legal copier, one who wrote legal letters and documents. However, scrivener is a synonym for scribe, so it could also be defined as “one who copies or writes.”
We use the word scrivener to describe our members because their contribution to the organization is writing letters. They are scriveners because a lot of their epistolary work is copying letters. Although every scrivener is entirely free to compose a unique letter, we provide templates which can be copied and used as guidelines to simplify the writing process for our members.
Who can be a scrivener? Anyone! There are no special requirements for membership. Although we are mainly focused on America, we welcome scriveners from all over the world. All you need is a computer, stationary, a pen, some stamps, and the desire to reform our society! A quill and ink are optional but not mandatory; you can use a ballpoint pen if you want to. The easiest way to participate is with a printer, which you can use to print typed-up letters directly from your computer. If you want to participate but don’t have a computer, I can help you via my other forms of contact, which you can access here.
The Legion of Scriveners offers membership in two forms, individual and group. Any private citizen can become an individual member. All you have to do is fill out the form at the bottom of the page and make a donation of at least $20. This money goes toward our maintenance costs. By becoming a member, you agree to write at least four letters a month to individuals and organizations which are on our list of current topics. Two of these letters must go to Hollywood, one to the MPA and the other to some studio or filmmaker. The other two must be sent to non-Hollywood individuals on the topic list. Four letters a month are mandatory, but additional ones may be written if desired. After a scrivener has sent a letter, he must make record of it on the Strictly Scriveners page, which can only be accessed by members and requires a password. This is mandatory so that we can know which topics are receiving the most attention and which topics need more support. Members can upload copies of the letters they send on the Strictly Scriveners page, but that is optional. If a member receives a response to his letter, it is necessary for him to report this at the Strictly Scriveners page and upload a copy of the response. At this point, we may require him to submit a copy of his original letter if he has not already done so. That way, we will be able to determine which letters are the most successful so that other scriveners can have equal success.
We also provide group membership. This membership is available for any official or unofficial group, club, or organization. We welcome social clubs, business groups, and non-profit organizations, among other associations. No organization is too large or small to be part of the Legion of Scriveners. In order for a group to become a member of the Legion of Scriveners, a board member of the organization must fill out the form at the bottom of this page on behalf of the whole group. A donation of at least $30 is required for group membership. The amount of letters we require a group to write each month is based on the size of the group. We require one letter per ten group members, rounded to the nearest tenth. For instance, if a group has 144 members, it must send fourteen letters per month. Half of these letters must be sent Hollywood, a quarter to the MPA and a quarter of studios and filmmakers. If the amount of mandatory letters is an odd number, the smaller half should go to Hollywood. The other half must be devoted to other topics on our list. These letters should be written by different members of the organization. Although very interested members of groups may write more than one letter per month, we don’t want all the letters to come from just a few members of the group. The idea is that the whole group can share the task and alternate between scriveners each month. However, if certain members feel that topics are especially pertinent to them, they may write multiple letters per month. As with individual scriveners, we require that groups let us know the writers and topics of all the letters each month on the Strictly Scriveners page. Also, letters may be uploaded. We require member groups to notate and upload any responses they receive, and we may require letters which receive responses to be uploaded if they have not already been submitted. Thus, other scriveners may learn and profit by studying these successful letters.
Membership in the Legion of Scriveners is annual. It lasts for twelve full months after the month in which an individual or group becomes a member. For instance, if you became a member in April of 2020, your membership would last until May 1, 2021. Membership donations are nonrefundable. If you decide to leave the Legion of Scriveners before your yearly membership has expired, we will not be able to return any of your money. The amount of letters an individual member has to submit is related to the part of the month at which he becomes a member. If he becomes a member before the 7th day of the month, he has to write the customary four letters that month. If he becomes a member between the 7th and the 14th, he has to write three letters. If between the 14th and the 21st, he must write two letters. If between the 21st and the 28th, only one letter is necessary. If he joins on or after the 28th, he doesn’t have to write any letters until the next month. The same applies to group members, but the letters will be measured in quarters instead of individual letters. If a group is supposed to write twenty letters per month, only fifteen have to be written if the group joins the LSR between the 7th and the 14th, and so on. If the group is supposed to a number of letters which does not divide into even quarters, the group has a choice between the two nearest numbers. For instance, if a group only has to write a quarter of its ten monthly letters, either two or three letters may be written.
Every letter brings us one step closer to a purer, more civilized society! Become a scrivener today!
